Nxai Pans

Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans National Park Botswana

The Makgadikgadi Pans and Nxai Pans together cover an area the size of Portugal and consist of several pans interspersed with dunes, stone islands, and desert-like areas. The two largest pans are Ntwetwe and Sua pans. Characteristic of these areas are some tall and more than 1000 years old Baobab trees, but otherwise very low vegetation with no vegetation at all in the pans themselves. During the rainy season, huge lakes are created that evaporate and gets absorbed into the soil completely in a matter of months.
