Khwai & Moremi National park

Khwai and Moremi National Park Botswana

Khwai and Moremi are adjacent to each other and have almost the same habitat and wildlife population. Moremi is the National Park and Khwai, on the other hand, is a vast park that does not have that status. Both are located north of Maun and can also be visited in a day trip, although we do not recommend that because of the limited time left to look for animals.

Wildlife

Both Khwai and Moremi are extremely rich in wildlife, with perhaps the greatest diversity of animals in all of Botswana. As they are both very rich in water, it attracts many animals. Leopard, lion, buffaloes, elephants, hippos, African painted dogs, hyaena, giraffe, waterbuck, zebra, kudu, impala, you can come across just about anything here. And what about the many bird and amphibian species. These are the top destinations in Botswana.

Accessibility

Khwai and Moremi are accessible from Savuti in the north and Maun in the south. In both cases it is at least a 3-4 hour drive before you reach the gate of Moremi / Khwai. The roads are deep sand from the north and from the south you drive on hard sand, but with a lot of corregation that creates a bumby ride. If you only want to visit Khwai, it is not necessary to drive through Moremi and thus you can avoid park fees. You then choose the road that leads you through Mababe.

Accommodations

There are several high-end lodges and several campsites in the park. The popularity and location of the campsites, makes it necessary to book early (1 year in advance).

Parkfees

You pay the Moremi National park entrance fee before entering the park at the park office. The costs for international customers with their own transport are BWP270 (approx. €20 per day per person and BWP115 (approx. €8) per car per day.

Khwai can be visited without paying park fees.
