Lower Zambezi

Lower Zambezi National Park Zambia

The Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia is located in the south of Zambia on the Zambezi River. Were it not for that river, it would form 1 large park with Mana Pools in Zimbabwe on the opposite side. Just like North Luangwa, the number of visitors to this park is extremely low, especially when it comes to self-drivers. The simple reason for this lies in the fact that you cannot camp in the park. There is an escarpment on the north side of the park, which creates a natural barrier for the animals and keeps them within the park. In addition to game drive activities, the Lower Zambezi park is known for its canoeing and fishing opportunities.

Kafue

Wildlife

Most of the animals can be found near the river, both in the park and in the adjacent Game Management Area. Here you will find elephants, lions, buffalo, leopard, hyena, wild dogs, but also waterbuck, kudu, zebra and of course hippos. The park is home for many species of birds, including the carmine bee-eater and the African fish eagle.

Accessibility

Lower Zambezi is accessible by car from Chirundu on a 4×4 road. The road is perfectly passable with a fairly new bridge over the Kafue river so that you no longer have to cross with a pontoon. The road through the escarpment is one for the adventure seekers and certainly no faster than the one via Chirundu.

Accommodations

There are only high-end lodges in the park. Camping is not possible in the Lower Zambezi park. However, adjacent to the park and closer to Chirundu is the Chiawa Game Management Area which has a number of excellent campsites and lodges.

Parkfees

You pay the entrance fee for the park at the entrance of the park. The cost for international customers with own transportation is $30 per day per person and $15 per car per day. There are no entrance fees for staying in the Game Management Area
