Liuwa Plain National park
Liuwa Plain National Park Zambia
The Liuwa Plain National Park is in western Zambia. Like North Luangwa, the number of visitors to this park are extremely low. The park is not as well known as its bigger brothers Kafue and South Luangwa. However, you should visit this beautiful park once. Especially since the second largest wildebeest migration takes place here every year, which you can view without the huge amount of other visitors like for example in Tanzania.
Wildlife
The park is known for its vast amount of wildebeest during the migration, it is also home to more than 350 hyenas, some lions, eland, tsetsebe, cheetah and a huge diversity of birds such as the cranes.
Accessibility
Liuwa Plain is accessible from May through October for self-drivers and is accessible from the south side. From Mongu you drive on a relatively new road to Kalabo, from where you take the ferry across the river into the park. The roads in the park between the river and the park headquarters are made of loose sand. In the rest of the park, the paths are good and easy to drive on.
Accommodations
There are a few high-end lodges in the park. Camping is perfectly possible in the park and there are several locally run campsites spread throughout the park with excellent sanitary facilities.
Parkfees
You pay the entrance fee for the park at the main office in the park which is about 12 km from the ferry. The cost for international customers with private transportation is $40 per day per person and $15 per car per day.
